Welcome to Fleet Steam - a look at Main Line Steam in North East Hampshire UK

Fleet is a rapidly growing town in North East Hampshire UK.  Trains pass through Fleet travelling between London and destinations to the south and west such as Southampton, Salisbury and Exeter.

My name is David Swan and on this site you will find images of main line steam tours from Fleet and the surrounding area, taken since 2001.  Also, from 2005 many photographs are accompanied by sound recordings.  I have included the occasional visit to some preserved railways.  Some locomotives have a brief history on the locomotive histories page.  Check out the main index for full details, or try the quick links below.  If you found this page whilst looking for local information try here.  If you need regular main line train services go to South West Trains.

Most of the Steam Trains passing through Fleet are Cathedrals Express tours run by Steam Dreams using a variety of locomotives with 60019 Bittern, 30777 Sir Lamiel and 70013 Oliver Cromwell all due to run in 2008.  There are occasional other tours, notably run by VSOE (Venice Simplon Orient Express).  These tours had been headed by Flying Scotsman for some time.  However, with the sale of this locomotive to the National Railway Museum in York, we are unlikely to see no. 4472 on the old London and South Western Railway lines again (but see latest news).  VSOE are using 35028 Clan Line for their tours at present, with 60009 Union of South Africa an occasional replacement.  The nearest standard gauge heritage steam railway is the Watercress Line or Mid-Hants Railway which runs regular services throughout most of the year.  The Watercress Line runs between Alton and Alresford.  Alton Station can be reached on the main line from London Waterloo and links directly with the Watercress Line.

I hope you find something of interest on this site.  If you have any comments or suggestions please contact me using the email address towards to bottom of this page.  Thank you for visiting.

Latest News

15 May 2008:  Note that the 'Atlantic Coast Express' trip on 25 May is now cancelled due to a gauging issue west of Salisbury.
02 December 2007:  850 Lord Nelson has suffered severe problems with its boiler.  It has been withdrawn from main line duties as is currently on static display at the National Railway Museum in York.
11 October 2007:  The National Railway Museum have agreed to hire out 4472 Flying Scotsman following the current overhaul.  Operators include Steam Dreams.  It's just possible we could see the famous 'A3' class locomotive running through Hampshire again after a break of some five years.  Any tours wouldn't run until 2009.
