On a warm and humid summer evening and in fading light Tangmere makes good progress through
Fleet with a Cathedrals Express tour. 34067 was heading for London Victoria following a trip to Yeovil.

No 4472 Flying Scotsman arrives at Fleet for a water stop at 12.26pm with a VSOE Excursion
to Southampton E Docks in the first picture in this sequrence. The other three views show 'Scotsman' during
the stop at Fleet.

Taw Valley (as 34045 Ottery St Mary) runs through Fleet in this sequence hauling
a Cathedrals Express tour to Exeter from London Waterloo. Taw Valley had been delayed near Woking
and running about 25 minutes late at this point. Perhaps making up some time 34027 is really 'motoring' as it passes.

approaching Shalford, Surrey. Next we see 34027 struggling away from Shalford Station following a water stop with
this VSOE circular from London Victoria. Also shown is nameplate detail on this WC Pacific.

On this autumn Saturday A4 class no 60009 Union of South Africa hauled a huge train for
the VSOE from London Victoria to Southampton Docks and return. The train, made up of atleast 12 coaches and a class
67 diesel, called at Winchfield for water which is where this sequence of pictures were taken.

These views were taken on the same day as the above images at Winchfield. The first picture
shows the water tanker used that morning. Without these services mainline charters would prove very difficult to run.
Secondly, is a mural in the booking hall at Winchfield. This depicts Winchfield Station as
the temporary teminus of the fledgling London and Southampton Railway Company between September 24th 1838 and June 10th 1839.
Finally, we see a very clean class 67 diesel backing up Union of South Africa as the
train departs.

At around 11.00pm BR no 71000 Duke of Gloucester has just arrived, tender first, at
Alton following a lengthy 12 hour trip from Crewe. The 'Duke' was due to haul several Steam Dreams tours over
the Christmas period.

Recently overhauled no 6024 King Edward I hardly disturbs the peace as it glides through
Twyford station in the lunchtime fog. The 'King' was heading the Merchant Venturer from Bristol to London Paddington.
